The origin of the city of Guanajuato was the discovery of the fabulous silver mines that made the late eighteenth century the largest producer of metal then known worldwide. Experimental Mine El Nopal

Mine of Rayas

It was named after Juan Rayas muleteer who discovered it in 1550, being the first mine in Guanajuato. His throw of 1400 feet is considered one of the largest in the world.

Mine of Valenciana

It was the richest mine in the city and is still in operation. At the end of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, this mine produced two thirds of all the silver from Guanajuato who was exported to Spain and Asia. The silver mine of Valenciana helped keep the Spanish Empire and its colonies.

Pithead of San Cayetano

It was one of the early work that led to the mining boom and where Valenciana Mine was the fifth of the gold and silver worldwide. Hours: Monday to Sunday from 10:00 to 19:00 hours.

Pithead of San Ramón
